OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Former state Senate leader Kay Floyd has stepped into the contest for Oklahoma City’s open Ward 6 council seat. She submitted campaign-finance paperwork and said she is running, which lifts the lineup to four people.

With statewide midterms finished, attention in the city shifts to four council posts that will be on the ballot. Three hopefuls had already made their interest in Ward 6 public after JoBeth Hamon, the current member, said she would not try for another term. Floyd is the late addition.

Floyd currently serves on the Oklahoma City municipal bench. She first reached the Oklahoma House in 2012, won a Senate seat two years later, and later became the first woman to head a caucus there. She left the Legislature for the bench and took the municipal oath on Aug. 27, 2025, the same day as Gunner Briscoe.

Hamon has represented Ward 6 since 2019. When she last faced voters in 2023, she defeated Marek Cornett 54.45 percent to 45.55 percent, with 2,968 ballots cast. The post carries a four-year term and yearly pay of $12,000.

Seats in Wards 2, 5 and 8 are also up this cycle. Anyone who wants on those ballots, including Ward 6, may file Dec. 7, 8 or 9, 2026. The citywide vote is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2027, giving residents only a short pause after the midterms before local races begin again.

Floyd’s jump into an open-seat field means Ward 6 voters will compare four names once filing closes. Hamon’s decision not to return set up the vacancy, and Floyd’s entry is the latest confirmed bid for the west-side post.
